Got questions about the Bible?

Thats okay! Here are some answers to common questions.

We believe the Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian belief and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error.

The Bible is not a traditional book that designed to be read from cover-to-cover. The individual sections (that we call books) contained within are organised somewhat chronologically, but mostly it's organised topically, and split into two main sections, the Old Testament (written before Jesus) and the New Testament (written after Jesus).

If you are looking to start reading the Bible, we recommend starting with John which is in the New Testament. This book covers the life and ministry of Jesus and many of his teachings. For help finding John, see the "How do I find a verse?" section below.

Every Bible reference is made up of a few parts. In the example John 3:16-18 we have the book (John), the chapter (3), and the verses (16 to 18).

To find this verse in your Bible:

  1. Look for the index that lists the books alphabetically (usually near the beginning)
  2. Find your book and the page number it starts on
  3. Starting from that page, move forward until you find the chapter number.
  4. Under that chapter, look for the smaller number that indicates the verse(s).

Sometimes a reference will include some letters at the end (eg. NIV or MSG) these refer to the translation or paraphrase - check out the "What's with all the letters/versions?" section below.

The letters are short-hand for various translations and paraphrases of the Bible.

As the Bible was originally written in mostly Hebrew and Greek there have been many translations (tells the reader what the original text says) and paraphrases (attempts to tell the reader what the passage means) made since.

We recommend the NIV (New International Version) translation as your first stop - this is one of the most common translation worldwide and what we preach out of the majority of the time at HumeRidge.
